Bowen Therapy
Bowen therapy is a holistic, gentle, soft tissue technique which aims to support and encourage the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Bowen heightens the healing and coping mechanisms within the body. This hands-on technique aims to allow relaxation and supports the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby encouraging rest, healing, and repair. Bowen aims to initiate a conversation between the nervous systems of the body.
It consists of gentle pressure applied in rolling movements over muscles, ligaments and tendons which triggers them to relax, allowing the body to make appropriate adjustments and realignments.
How does it work?
Bowen heightens the healing and coping mechanisms within the body. This hands-on technique aims to allow relaxation and supports the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby encouraging rest, healing, and repair. Bowen aims to initiate a conversation between the nervous systems of the body. It consists of gentle pressure applied in rolling movements over muscles, ligaments and tendons which triggers them to relax, allowing the body to make appropriate adjustments and realignments. The moves are made through light clothing or on bare skin. Between each set of moves is a break which allows the communication to take place. A fundamental component of Bowen is it is the body doing the work and healing, not the therapist. The breaks give the body that time to respond to each move. Some people spend too much time functioning under sympathetic nervous system control – ‘fight or flight’ – which can restrict healing and the natural repair mechanisms within the body. Bowen therapy can help support the body to spend unnecessary time out of this sympathetic control.
Bowen addresses the whole body rather than focusing on single complaints. It treats the person as a whole and restores balance.
Bowen offers an enjoyable means to reduce stress and anxiety and leaves you feeling calm, relaxed, and rejuvenated.
Bowen can help with emotional stress and improve quality of life for the terminally ill.
Bowen can help with problems during pregnancy and is gentle enough to use on newborn babies.
How quickly will it work?
This varies from individual to individual and depends on how longstanding the condition is and how long the body has been compensating for it. Clients report feeling much better in themselves from the first or second Bowen treatment and some acute conditions will resolve, or become significantly more manageable in 1-3 sessions.
Some chronic longstanding conditions may take a little longer to respond to Bowen therapy support, and some may require ongoing maintenance therapy.
Are there any risks and what should I expect?
Bowen is one of the safest hands-on therapies available. It is very gentle and suitable for all ages and all degrees of health. You can benefit from Bowen even if you are not unwell. It is enjoyable and a great way to maintain the body in good health and balance.
Bowen supports a healthy immune system response, encourages better sleep, more energy, improved range of motion and less pain. Complications are very rare. The moves are non-invasive, subtle, well accepted by the body and not painful. During the session you will often feel deeply relaxed or even fall asleep.

Some people experience a profound release of stress and the shift towards parasympathetic nervous system influence which is when the benefits of Bowen can really be felt. Following a session, you may see changes during the subsequent days and usually a repeat session would be 7-10 days later. Sometimes only one or two sessions are enough to see a noticeable change.
